Overview

General relativity is Albert Einstein's theory of gravity, which states that the universe has an underlying fabric called spacetime that can be bent by mass and energy. While Isaac Newton described gravity as an invisible force between masses, Albert Einstein's model explained that it arises from the curvature of spacetime. Like flowing water redirected by a riverbank, what we perceive as motion due to gravity is actually matter and light traveling along these curves.

Einstein's revision was necessary after he discovered that nothing could move faster than light, which conflicted with Newton's belief that gravity traveled at infinite speed. The equations of general relativity showed that gravity travels at the speed of light and explained discrepancies between observations and predictions made by Newton's law of gravity, such as those involving Mercury's orbit.

The theory predicted multiple phenomena that later proved to be true, including gravitational waves, black holes, differences in the passage of time at different elevations, and the bending of light around massive objects, known as gravitational lensing. General relativity also enabled the development of GPS and provided the foundation for the Big Bang theory.
