Within Einstein's picture of the universe, gravity is technically not a force because forces cause accelerations that deviate objects from their natural path, and moving solely due to gravity is natural.

Findings

Additional insights we found via Fermilab

  1. According to general relativity, what we perceive as gravity is the curvature of spacetime, and objects move along straight paths through this curved geometry spontaneously, only deviating from it if an external force, such as the magnetic force, is introduced.

  2. Within Newton's framework of the universe, gravity is a force, as quantified by his law of universal gravitation.

  3. In quantum physics, all forces are mediated by particles, and because the gravity-mediating particle—the graviton—has not been discovered, it is not considered a force.

  4. Various models of gravity at the subatomic scale, such as loop quantum gravity, entropic gravity, and string theory, describe gravity as emerging from phenomena that may or may not categorize it as a force, depending on one's interpretation of the word "force."
