Because some models of the universe do not incorporate time, it may be an emergent property born from our limited perception of the universe, rather than a fundamental property of reality.

Findings

Additional insights we found via TED-Ed

  1. Theories that try to explain all aspects of the universe must incorporate quantum mechanics and general relativity—frameworks that govern the subatomic and macroscopic realms, respectively—but, in part because of how they each treat time, they are incompatible with one another, creating uncertainty about the fundamental nature of time.

  2. Albert Einstein's special theory of relativity highlights how time is tied to each person by showing that the rate of its passage varies with a person's motion, but the theory also combines time with space, even though we can only move forward in time while moving in any direction of space.

  3. Scientists argue that the arrow of time—the concept describing how time only moves forward—results from it being impossible for disorder, or entropy, to decrease in the universe, and this steady evolution of events, such as a dropped egg breaking into many pieces versus unbreaking, dictates what events must follow others and therefore the directionality of time.
