According to the special theory of relativity, the faster objects move through space, the less they move through time, and therefore age more slowly.

Additional insights we found via Live Science

  1. In order for the speed of light to be the same for all observers, no matter how fast they are moving, the equations of special relativity detail that everything that moves through space must undergo time dilation.

  2. Just as turning from north to northwest on a road reduces one's northward motion, moving through space reduces one's speed through time, causing an object to age more slowly.

  3. Observers in motion will perceive time passing as it always has, but because they are moving through time more slowly, everything in their surroundings that is moving more slowly will undergo a greater passage of time, such as aging by four years while the moving observer ages by three years.

  4. Moving at the speed of light, photons do not travel through time and therefore do not age.
