Scientists showed that the relativistic effect of time dilation was real after comparing atomic clocks flown around the world with stationary ones on Earth's surface.

Scientists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology have constructed clocks made out of stacked strontium atoms, which show differences in the passage of time across just a millimeter of height consistent with predictions from general relativity, where atoms closer to Earth's center tick off time more slowly.

The Global Positioning System relies on signals from satellites to calculate locations on Earth by measuring time and distance. However, their orbits, being farther from Earth's center, cause them to experience less gravitational time dilation. These systems would be off by 11 kilometers per day without relativistic corrections.

Due to differences in where objects are located within gravitational fields, time will run at different rates, which has major impacts on technology that relies on synchronization. For example, GPS satellites run about 38 microseconds faster every day than clocks on Earth's surface, resulting in GPS discrepancies of about six miles, were it not for software corrections.

The experiment involved attaching four freely floating gyroscopes to a telescope aimed at a distant star for a year. The observed angular shift of the gyroscopes as a result of Earth's rotation pulling on spacetime was approximately 0.0000012 degrees from the amount predicted by general relativity.

Besides accurately explaining the slight wobble observed in Mercury's orbit, general relativity predicted that light would bend around massive objects by an amount matching what was observed when background starlight bent around the sun during an eclipse. The theory also predicted the existence of gravitational waves and black holes decades before they were found.

Einstein's theory of general relativity—that mass literally bends space and time—can be difficult for the human brain to imagine. This interactive resource lets you create celestial objects, imagine their effect on space-time, and see how they interact with each other (best viewed on desktop).

Physicists used the muon half-life measured in labs to predict how many should reach detectors on Earth's surface after their production in collisions between atmospheric molecules and cosmic rays. Higher detection rates were consistent with a longer half-life due to slower movement through time.

Atoms behave according to a set of parameters that scientists have determined give reality its properties. For example, the fine-structure constant, α, quantifies the strength of interactions between charged particles. Since the light emitted by atoms as they move between energy levels is affected by α, analyzing these emissions—the basis of atomic clocks—using different atoms helps calculate α.

Small variations in the production of human-made devices, such as mechanical watches and pendulums, make them unreliable for the ultraprecise timekeeping required by modern technology, including financial transaction timestamping and GPS. Because atoms obey fundamental laws of nature and never wear out, their light emissions when energized provide a consistent timekeeping signal.

Because Earth exerts a stronger gravitational pull than the moon, it lags behind between 56 and 59 microseconds each day, or about one second every 46.5 years. This impacts essential synchronous operations of future electronic equipment on the lunar surface, which could be alleviated by a standardized conversion system between Earth and moon time zones.

About seven base units, such as meters for length, have historically been used to describe everything in our physical reality. However, researchers have shown that, through relativistic space-time, clocks can serve as replacements for rulers, scales, and other instruments, allowing everything to be measured in terms of time.

The site displays the current time across all American time zones—corrected for network delay—and shows whether your device's clock has drifted. Computer clocks rely on quartz crystals that drift slightly with temperature and age, requiring alignment with atomic clocks (which are so stable that seconds are defined by them).

Astrolabes also provided a person's latitude based on the height of the stars in the sky, thus aiding in navigation. Incense and candle clocks relied on the constant burning rate of fire to track the passage of time based on premarked locations with equal-interval spacing.

Data from a 16-year study of an orbiting pair of spinning neutron stars showed that measurements of gravitational wave energy and the bending of light around the system were consistent with predictions made by general relativity to an accuracy of at least 99.99% across seven tests.

While depictions involving bends in elastic fabrics are common to illustrate gravity, they are circular representations that rely on gravity in the real world to depict gravity in the model. The river model instead shows how bends in spacetime convert speed through time into speed through space, producing acceleration.

Although Newton's "universal" law is unreliable in strong gravitational fields when compared with the field equations of general relativity, it is still taught for its accuracy on everyday scales. However, gravity's effect on small scales is too weak to be measured reliably, its accuracy at atomic scales remains unknown.

Circadian rhythms were first observed in the 1700s, when French astronomer Jean-Jacques D'Ortous de Mairan put a plant in a dark room and watched it still respond to day and night cycles, setting off further studies about specific light-dark biological cycles, an area of inquiry that continues today with the human "clock proteins" at the molecular level.

The closer something is to the center of a massive object, the greater the strength of the massive object's gravitational field as a result of space-time being depressed more severely. Time passes more slowly the deeper an object is in this gravitational depression, meaning objects in the universe naturally seek to age more slowly.

Although working independently of one another, the two exchanged correspondence in the lead up to November 1915, when Hilbert submitted their gravitational field equations five days before Einstein presented their work. An error in Hilbert's formulation and its nonpublication until March 1916 would leave credit for general relativity to Einstein.

Unlike traditional crystals—whose atomic structures cause them to look identical no matter how you look at them in space—time crystals exhibit this behavior through time, where the motion of atoms will bring them to the same positions relative to one another regularly.

The equations of special relativity require these objects to possess imaginary mass, and they would travel faster the more energy is taken away from them. The existence of tachyons would necessitate an unknown form of matter and lead to paradoxes involving information that can hypothetically travel backward in time.
