In the 18th century, various experiments, including one in which monks holding an iron wire were shocked, suggested that electricity traveled at infinite speed.
Through the development of electrodynamics and the theory of electromagnetism, scientists learned that electric signals were electromagnetic waves, or light, and electrons moved with a much smaller drift velocity because they constantly collide with atoms that make up a material.
