Simulate the build-up and discharge of static electricity with 'John Travoltage.'

Findings

Additional insights we found via PhET

  1. A negative charge imbalance can be developed on an object through friction, which "scrapes" electrons from a second object, such as a carpet.

  2. Because particles with the same charge naturally repel one another, collected electrons will naturally distribute themselves throughout the surface of an object.

  3. To generate a static shock—the discharge of collected electrons to get rid of the imbalance—the object with the imbalance must interact with a conductive surface, such as a metal doorknob.

  4. The greater the established imbalance, the further the discharge can travel through the air.
