  1. Voltage describes how much energy each charged particle possesses, and current describes how quickly these charges flow, but power, measured in watts, is the product of these two values and contributes to the lethality of electrocution.

  2. Although current is often cited as the cause of injuries from electrocutions because it is related to the delivery of energetic particles, these particles must also possess enough energy—voltage—to overcome the natural resistance of skin or other bodily tissue to flow across them.

  3. The resistance comes from electrons colliding with the atoms that make up a material, which absorb some of the electrons' kinetic energy and vibrate more quickly, increasing the material's temperature and potentially causing burns.

  4. Despite a material's resistance, when the voltage is high enough, its insulating properties may deteriorate, leading to dielectric breakdown and turning it into a conductor that easily allows current to flow and increases electrocution risks.

  5. At high enough alternating current frequencies, nerves cannot respond to reversals fast enough, reducing the likelihood of feeling shocks, but they can still cause burns on the surface of the skin, called RF burns.

  6. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, voltages above 50 volts are considered hazardous, but static shocks, which can reach thousands of volts, are not lethal because they occur over extremely short periods of time.
