  1. The US electrical grid is often called the world's most complicated machine, with over 10,000 utility-scale power plants and hundreds of thousands of miles of transmission lines.

  2. While the grid is designed with redundancies and to restart quickly in the event of an interruption, because of its complexity and outdated infrastructure, it has many vulnerabilities—some experts estimate that an attack on as few as nine key substations could bring down the entire grid.

  3. During a permanent power grid failure, cell towers fail within 8 hours of a blackout, hospitals exhaust their backup power within 3 days, and water systems stop functioning within a week.

  4. Suermarkets, which keep only about three days of inventory, would quickly empty, and without the electricity and transportation systems they rely on, modern food production would also halt.
