Simulations of atmospheric transport have shown that radioactive material released from potential strikes to US nuclear missile silos would reach everyone in the continental US.

As of 2023, these intercontinental ballistic missiles are located in about 450 underground silos across North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Nebraska, originally built to target the Soviet Union while avoiding major population centers.
While previous estimates suggested risks were more confined to communities near these silos and along the jet stream's path in the Great Lakes and Northeast regions, wind variability can spread potentially lethal doses of fallout across the country if a strike occurred.
Beyond the US, simulations show that Canada's most populated areas, as well as the northern states of Mexico, would also be at risk.
