  1. As part of Operation Fishbowl, Starfish Prime tested the explosion of a 1.4 megaton bomb at an altitude of 400 kilometers (250 miles)—the average altitude of the future International Space Station.

  2. Bright auroras were reportedly observed in the detonation area, and the resulting EMP was stronger than expected, reaching Honolulu, nearly 1,450 kilometers (900 miles) away.

  3. Electrons released in the detonation became trapped in radiation belts that followed Earth's magnetic field, and these belts would damage additional satellites in the years that followed.

  4. A cadmium tracer located in the bomb helped scientists determine the seasonal mixing rate of polar and tropical air masses.
