Atomic nuclei have varying levels of stability based on the number of protons and neutrons in their nuclei and the forces that hold those particles together, with greater radioactivity related to greater instability.
This instability results from excess internal energy, which is released whenever an atom becomes a more stable isotope, such as heavy elements like uranium breaking apart or hydrogen fusing together until they form Iion-56—the most stable element.
In an atomic bomb, a heavy element is destabilized by adding a neutron, causing it to split and release more neutrons, which triggers a chain reaction that detonates the entire mass as more and more of the unstable element undergoes fission, provided the density is sufficiently high to sustain the reaction.
In a hydrogen or thermonuclear bomb, a smaller nuclear detonation provides the pressure and energy needed to trigger the fusion of deuterium and tritium—hydrogen nuclei with one or two neutrons, respectively—which releases enormous amounts of energy and neutrons that react with nuclear fuel, such as lithium deuteride, to produce more tritium in a runaway reaction.
Beyond releasing energy, the explosion of a nuclear weapon produces enormous quantities of neutrons, which can be absorbed by atoms in surrounding material, thereby introducing instability and making them radioactive.
