Additional insights we found via this resource

  1. On January 21, 1968, a fire disabled a B-52's electrical systems, forcing the crew to eject before the plane crashed into the ice near Thule Air Base, Greenland, carrying four hydrogen bombs.

  2. The conventional explosives in all four bombs detonated on impact, scattering radioactive plutonium across the ice, though safety mechanisms prevented a nuclear explosion.

  3. A cleanup operation removed an estimated 90% of the plutonium, but investigators could only recover components from three of the four weapons.

  4. The crash later revealed that Denmark, which had declared itself nuclear-free, had secretly allowed nuclear-armed American flights over Greenland for years.
