President Harry Truman approved dropping the bomb after intelligence showed Japan had deployed over 560,000 soldiers to defend against an expected invasion.
The bomb, nicknamed "Little Boy," detonated 2,000 feet above the city with the force of more than 15,000 tons of TNT, reaching temperatures of 7,000 degrees Fahrenheit at ground level.
Pilot Paul Tibbets had less than 45 seconds to steer the Enola Gay clear of the blast after releasing the bomb.
Hiroshima survivor Reverend Kiyoshi Tanimoto described seeing "a tremendous flash of light cut across the sky" like "a sheet of sun" from two miles away.
