  1. On Aug. 15, Emperor Hirohito of Japan addressed the Japanese people to announce the country's acceptance of Allied surrender terms—the first time many people ever heard his voice.

  2. The document required Japan to immediately cease all hostilities, surrender all armed forces worldwide, and submit the authority of the emperor and Japanese government entirely to General MacArthur as Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers.

  3. MacArthur allowed Hirohito to remain on the throne to maintain stability, but later required him to publicly renounce his divinity, which he did on New Year's Day 1946.

  4. President Truman personally chose the USS Missouri as the site for the ceremony because the ship had been christened by his daughter, Margaret, and he had spoken at its launching while still a senator.
