The Norwood Scale is a standardized system used to describe the degree of male pattern baldness, ranging from minimal hair loss to almost complete hair loss, resulting in only a thin strip of remaining hair. Male pattern baldness is formally called androgenic alopecia.
First described in the 1950s by Dr. James Hamilton and updated since then, the standard male pattern baldness hair loss classification system helps clinicians determine which treatments are appropriate based on the stage of loss.
Certain FDA-approved medications, such as minoxidil or finasteride, may be effective for early-stage hair loss, but more significant hair loss may require options like hair transplant surgery, if available.
