Retired professional soccer players are showing signs of potential neurological impacts in midlife, according to a study presented at the July 2026 Alzheimer's Association International Conference in London.

  1. Researchers reporting the new findings say that it remains unclear whether former players' neurological impacts stem from long-term exposures to repetitive head impacts (e.g. when they head the ball) or if other unidentified factors common across professional players may explain these links.

  2. Brain scans of 142 former players, including 126 men and 16 women aged 30 to 60, revealed that players had lower gray matter in brain areas related to memory, decision-making, attention, and emotional regulation compared with participants who didn't play contact sports.
