Long-term memory issues among West Nile survivors may be from the body's immune response, not the viral infection.

Rodent research suggests that long-term neurological complications such as fatigue, weakness, difficulty walking, and memory loss, may be due to the immune system systematically destroying parts of neurons in the brain in response to the infection, rather than due to viral infection itself.
In lab research, infected mice couldn't remember how to navigate a maze—similar to the symptoms of West Nile survivors who have trouble navigating their neighborhoods. Yet brain scans indicate that the rodents' hippocampal neurons hadn’t died. Researchers instead saw that a type of immune cells were clustered around the neurons at infection sites.
