Hair loss after childbirth happens because pregnancy hormones paused the normal hair shedding process during pregnancy, so the hair loss is actually your hair cycle 'catching up' with its normal process several months postpartum.

Additional insights we found via The Science of Motherhood

  1. Hair follicles typically work in cycles, with the majority of the hair in its growth phase, and the rest in either a clumping stage called catagen, or the final resting phase called telogen.

  2. During pregnancy, when estrogen levels are high, it prolongs the growth phase of the hair follicles, halting the normal transition to the telogen resting phase, and causing hair to look fuller and lustrous because hair isn't being shed as normal.

  3. When estrogen levels drop postpartum to a woman's normal range, the hairs are cued to move to the telogen phase, with the standard hair cycle returning to its typical pattern by 6 to 12 months postpartum.
