Without treatment, hair regrowth may begin between three and six months after hair starts falling out among people experiencing telogen effluvium.
It remains challenging to tie telogen effluvium to a specific cause in individuals because hair loss may not begin for as long as two to four months after the stressor or illness.
Black women disproportionately experience a type of genetically-linked hair loss that starts on the top of the head, called central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, or CCCA, which can be treated with prescribed medication before hair follicles develop scars.
