Hair is comprised largely of keratin, the same protein found in our fingernails and rhino horn.
Hair grows in three distinct phases consisting of a mutli-year growth phase (anagen), a regressing stage that can last several weeks, called catagen, which causes hairs to slightly shrink and clump before they're shed, and a final resting phase called telogen, that can last for months but only affects a fraction of your scalp as hair shedding takes place.
Hair loss medications can target the resting phase of hair growth to try to shorten it and trigger the hair growth stage to kick into gear. Some medications also try to halt male pattern baldness by targeting testosterone to block it from converting into a substance called dihydrotestosterone, which causes hair follicle shrinkage.
