Hair cells typically divide quickly, and chemotherapy disproportionately affects fast-dividing cells, such as cancer cells, as well as hair cells.
Automated scalp cooling caps are regulated by the FDA, and the devices circulate a liquid or gel cooled to a specific temperature.
These devices are approved for use with solid tumor cancers, not blood cancers, because blood cancers like leukemia, lymphoma, or multiple myeloma may have cancerous cells throughout the blood and lymph system so the chemo needs to get to all available areas, including the scalp.
