Pregnancy causes a woman's blood volume to increase by up to 50%.

Pushing 2,000 gallons of blood through the body every day exerts a force known as blood pressure. Blood pressure is highest during the heart's contractile phase, known as systole, which forces blood through the circulatory system, and lowest during the heart's resting phase between beats, known as diastole.

In one recent study, almost 100% of pregnant women experienced this condition in their third trimester. The congestion is likely due to hormonal changes and neurophysiological factors, and it may also worsen at night due to circadian factors and gravitational redistribution when lying down. Treatments include saline nasal irrigation and the use of nasal strips to widen the nasal valve area.

Gestation is the period of time between conception and birth when a baby grows inside the mother's womb. Changes occur constantly over the course of these 40 weeks. At week 17, for instance, the skeleton of a fetus begins changing from soft...

Globally, pregnant people are increasingly at risk to develop gestational diabetes due to rising maternal ages and obesity rates. The condition is associated with heavier fetal weight, congenital abnormalities, and perinatal mortality, which includes stillbirths and deaths of babies younger than 7 days old.

This graphic illustrates how development proceeds during each week of pregnancy, tracking what shifts and milestones typically occur during each stage of the process. It also includes typical weights of the fetus throughout.

We've evolved to make pregnancy a complex and difficult process. From the initial development of the blastocyst, to the energy and nutrients needed to grow a new human, our bodies are both fighting and supporting fetal development.

High blood sugar levels in untreated diabetes roughen artery walls, increasing plaque buildup, heart disease, and high blood pressure risk. High levels also cause acid to build up in the bloodstream, potentially making the brain swell, the lungs fill with fluid, and the heart to beat arrhythmically—all fatal complications.

Boosted smell powers and strong reactions to them are often reported beginning around the six-week mark of pregnancy. Researchers say hormonal changes likely play a role, but the change remains poorly understood.

Researchers estimate that 63 to 315 cases of congenital Chagas disease occur annually in the US. Roughly 20 to 30 percent of all Chagas disease cases will progress to cardiac or gastrointestinal disease.

Chromosomal irregularities are more likely at older maternal ages so genetic testing for a fetus of mothers-to-be at age 35 and older is often recommended. Conditions that can be screened for in utero include cystic fibrosis, Tay-Sachs disease, sickle cell disease, Down syndrome, spina bifida, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and more.

The stress response is a powerful ancient mechanism designed to maximize human survival—it can even result in superhuman strength. The adrenal glands are located just above the kidneys, and stress-induced adrenaline release causes more blood (and therefore more oxygen) to flow to your muscles, increasing performance.

This rare type of tinnitus, which sounds like rhythmic thumping or whooshing, is often linked to blood vessel conditions or high blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure through exercise and food choices can help reduce the severity of this condition.

Research published in 2012 suggests that the intense emotional burden of suffering a loved one's death can escalate heart rate, blood pressure, and clot risks—culminating in elevated heart attack risk. The increased heart attack risk remains after that first day, remaining eight times above normal during the first week, and then dropping down over the course of a month.

Drugs that narrow blood vessels, beta blockers that regulate blood pressure, diuretics, antidepressants, and antipsychotics can all affect the body's ability to regulate its internal body temperature, and so individuals taking these medications need to take special care in extreme heat and when exercising in hot conditions.

Researchers have shown that being around someone who is stressed can trigger a stress response in your body, such as elevated cortisol levels and elevated heart rate. One way this was recently studied was by having people watch stressful activities, like a recorded job interview or solving challenging math problems, and then sampling hormones in observers' spit.

Your heart does amazing things day in and day out. Its main job is crucial: It keeps oxygenated blood circulating throughout your body. Did you know that, other than your cornea, every cell in your body gets blood from your heart? You may not think...

The first weeks of embryonic development, known as embryogenesis, are one of the most critical phases during pregnancy. This simple breakdown from the Khan Academy illustrates what we know about how the complex process unfolds.

Some research shows that menopause can fuel anxiety and also that preexisting anxiety can boost the chances of experiencing other menopause symptoms, including hot flashes, insomnia, and brain fog. But treatments—including hormone replacement therapy, breathing exercises, and other forms of exercise—can alleviate some of these symptoms.

This routine vaginal bleeding is part of a woman's hormonal cycle and occurs after an egg is released by an ovary during ovulation and isn't fertilized. Also known as periods, this monthly occurrence can cause a number of symptoms, including cramping, fatigue, and mood changes.

Scientists in the late 1920s and early 1930s discovered estrogens could be extracted from human placenta, and then isolated it from the urine of pregnant women. But researchers discovered the urine of pregnant horses had similar substances and the horse product was much easier to collect in significant amounts—leading to Premarin.

The red stuff currently pumping throughout your body is a type of connective tissue that is both a solid and a liquid. The liquid portion—plasma—acts as a carrier for the solid portion, which includes blood cells and their biological brethren. Your body is constantly refreshing its supply of blood, creating new cells to replace those that have expired or died. This article overviews some lesser-known facts about blood (and why it's not always red).

The feeling of falling in love floods the brain with dopamine, oxytocin and serotonin, which collectively dull pain and boost immunity. However, the loss of these chemicals during a break-up produces withdrawal-like symptoms and heart issues, such as high blood pressure.

Stress is our body’s internal mechanism to deal with changes in our internal balance. As such, the stress response affects nearly every organ system through a cascade of both fast and slow hormonal changes. While short-term stress can be adaptive, long-term stress may cause serious health issues.

When we're born, about three-quarters of our bodies are composed of water, dropping to an average of 55-60% for the average adult. The lungs are over 80% water, the kidneys and spleen about 80%, and the heart and brain are approximately three-quarters composed of water—about the same moisture as a banana.

Tucked behind your rib cage and between your lungs sits your heart. This knot of cardiac muscle will (typically) beat billions of times throughout your lifetime, sending oxygenated and nutrient-rich blood throughout the body, powering countless biological processes that have enabled you to read this very paragraph. This two-minute video provides a glimpse of the mechanics happening inside your chest via an animated anatomical model.

The extreme conditions of the deep sea include increasing amounts of pressure as explorers and organisms descend into its depths. The major danger for both fish and humans is the way pressure changes how body tissues absorb chemical molecules...

Pregnancies involving three kids or more have dropped 62% from 1998 to 2023, a trend that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention links to fewer embryo transfers during assisted reproduction procedures—a transition prompted by more refined techniques and technical advances. Though multiple births can occur naturally, often pregnancies involving multiple births have been the result of efforts to ensure pregnancy success by transferring multiple embryos.

About 55% of your blood volume is plasma, the liquid part of blood created from water, proteins, minerals, and salts absorbed through the digestive tract. This 49-minute podcast episode explores the business of plasma—part of a global industry expected to be worth $50B by 2029.

March Madness isn’t just a major sporting event—it’s also peak season for vasectomies. Urologists report a 50% increase during the tournament, as patients use recovery time as an excuse to watch nonstop basketball. Meanwhile, workplace distractions from bracket pools and game streaming are estimated to cost US businesses $17 billion.

A rare disorder that prevents some babies from getting enough oxygen to their organs can be repaired through a series of three intricate surgeries. This article and graphic explain the process behind correcting single-ventricle defects, also known as SVDs.This disorder happens when one of the heart's lower chambers doesn't work correctly, resulting in deoxygenated and oxygenated blood circulating the body rather than just the latter.
