Within large language models—the foundational models that process data and generate text for AI chatbots—weights are numeric parameters that determine whether certain words or subwords appear in the output, based on the prompt and what has already been generated.
Weights can be established from training data, such as identifying grammatical patterns in text that suggest which words follow others, or from human training, which can dial the parameters up or down to help outputs more accurately reflect human writing or avoid certain topics, such as violence.
For proprietary models like Claude and ChatGPT, weights are not publicly available, but they can be approximated by prompting a model multiple times to see how often certain terms appear.
