Unlike generative AI systems, such as chatbots that do not take follow-up actions after generating their output, agentic AI systems proactively take steps to achieve goals without continuous user input.

AI chatbots generate responses based on identified patterns in vast amounts of existing text, while agentic AI systems carry out multiple steps based on an initial prompt and their environment, collect data based on the outcomes of those steps, and continue working based on what they learn.
Large language models serve as the underlying software for processing and finding patterns in text for AI chatbots, as well as the reasoning engines that make up the backbone of agentic AI systems.
Agentic AI systems can initially be trained on specialized datasets to handle specific tasks efficiently, such as resolving common customer service issues, and get connected to various databases to expand their capabilities.
