  1. Before generative systems, computer software combined prerecorded phonemes to construct words that matched audio maps called spectrograms, much like putting puzzle pieces together to match a source picture.

  2. With machine learning, AI programs are given many voice samples for speech analysis and phoneme pattern identification to produce more natural-sounding speech.

  3. While artificial voice technology improves accessibility by enabling various text-to-speech software, including screen readers and navigation systems, it has also been used to spread misinformation and disinformation via audio deepfakes, in which a synthetic voice impersonates a real person for malicious purposes.
