Deepfakes are media created using generative AI tools that intentionally misrepresent real people or events—often for malicious purposes—at the cost of public trust, security, and privacy.

Additional insights we found via 1440 Originals

  1. The term deepfake is a combination of "deep learning" and "fake," with the former referring to computer systems that can identify patterns in vast datasets and apply them to produce realistic content.

  2. Outputs of generative AI tools, such as the large language models and diffusion models underlying AI chatbots and AI image generators, respectively, are not considered deepfakes unless they are created with the intent to deceive.

  3. As related technologies become increasingly available, deepfakes have an increasing potential to spread misinformation, incite violence, ruin a person's reputation, and cause additional harm on a large scale.
