  1. Entering the atmosphere at nearly 60 times the speed of sound, the resulting impact formed a crater 25 kilometers (16 miles) deep and 100 kilometers (62 miles) wide, generated a magnitude 11 earthquake, and produced a tsunami taller than any skyscraper on Earth.

  2. Air temperatures are likely to have increased by hundreds of degrees due to the impact, which released the equivalent energy of billions of nuclear weapons and kicked up debris that warmed the atmosphere via friction as it rose and fell.

  3. As soot, dust, and other aerosols generated by the impact spread across the atmosphere and blocked sunlight, temperatures are thought to have plummeted by a few dozen degrees, killing off significant photosynthetic life, including almost all phytoplankton, which cascaded into the deaths of other marine life up the food chain.
