Cosmic rays are evidence of incredibly powerful astronomical events—solar cosmic rays provide information about eruptions and flares on the sun's surface, while galactic cosmic rays shed light on dying stars.

Additional insights we found via TED-Ed

  1. Cosmic rays are high-energy, primarily charged particles moving near the speed of light, which are thought to have been accelerated to those velocities by magnetic fields.

  2. Installed in 2011, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer is a particle physics experiment module on the International Space Station that has identified over 268 billion cosmic-ray events as of 2026, and sent this information to the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

  3. Analysis of cosmic ray events in space-based and ground-based detectors has enabled scientists to estimate the frequency of high-energy events throughout the cosmos and to assess the accuracy of cosmic models by comparing their predicted abundance with observations.
