Unlike the other major detectors at the Large Hadron Collider, the Compact Muon Solenoid—one of two general-purpose detectors—was built above ground and then lowered underground in sections for reassembly.

  1. The CMS identifies all stable particles and their properties by taking "photographs" of collisions in all directions up to 40 million times per second, enabling detailed reconstructions of particle collisions and their evolution over time.
