The Higgs boson is a quanta, or discrete piece, of the Higgs field, which gives elementary particles, such as quarks and electrons, their mass.

Additional insights we found via StarTalk

  1. As fundamental particles travel through the field, they interact with it to varying degrees, resulting in different amounts of mass, much as different objects experience different amounts of drag when traveling through a fluid.

  2. The Higgs boson was theorized in 1964 and discovered at the Large Hadron Collider in 2012 via high-energy proton collisions.

  3. Sufficiently energetic collisions in the field will produce detectable particles, not unlike sufficiently low temperatures causing droplets to condense from water vapor.

  4. Although protons and neutrons are made of quarks, which get their mass through the Higgs interaction, only about 1% of the mass of protons and neutrons comes from quarks and therefore the Higgs mechanism.

  5. About 99% of the mass of protons and neutrons comes from gluons—the particles that transmit the strong nuclear force that binds quarks together.
