At CERN's Antimatter Factory, researchers create and guide antiprotons and antielectrons together to form antihydrogen—all of which are analyzed to help scientists study the behavior of antimatter.

In the Antimatter Factory, protons are accelerated into iridium at 99.93% the speed of light to produce showers of quark-antiquark pairs, with some of these elementary particles occasionally coming together to form a composite particle made of two anti-up quarks and one anti-down quark—an antiproton.
After colliding electrons moving at up to 99.9% of the speed of light into tungsten, which causes them to slow down and emit light that can turn into electron-antielectron pairs, researchers at the Antimatter Factory can use electromagnetic fields to guide the antimatter for the eventual production of antihydrogen.
The production of antihydrogen also requires particle decelerators, which use lasers and electromagnetic fields to slow the antiprotons and antielectrons produced until they can combine into antihydrogen without passing one another.
Antimatter experiments at CERN include observing whether antimatter reacts to Earth's gravity in the same way as normal matter by releasing antimatter from electromagnetic traps.
