Although built from 1996 to 2008, the Large Hadron Collider relies on accelerators built starting in 1955 to help bring protons to 99.9999991% the speed of light—about 3.28 million football fields per second.

These protons are successively accelerated in Linear Accelerator 4, the Proton Synchrotron Booster, the Proton Synchrotron, and the Super Proton Synchrotron, which were built in 2020, 1972, 1959, and 1972, respectively.
The accelerations are produced by electromagnets, which can exert forces on charged particles.
After particles are sent to the LHC in bundles in opposite directions, each bundle is accelerated by electromagnetic waves synchronized with the passing particles, much like pushing on a swing with the right timing to gain additional height.
