Scientists can map Earth's shape and structure by measuring the ratios of certain particles arriving from different directions in space, as these ratios change with the density of the material particles travel through.

Neutrinos exist in three flavors—electron, muon, and tau—and spontaneously oscillate, or switch, between them as they travel through space, with the number of oscillations strongly dependent on the type of material they travel through.
Because some neutrinos only travel through Earth's atmosphere while others travel through the entirety or some portion of Earth's interior on their way to a detector, the ratio of detected neutrinos varies by detection angle.
By measuring the ratios of electron, muon, and tau neutrinos that take different paths through Earth's interior and comparing them with particle physics models that predict ratios based on the paths traveled, scientists can calculate how far Earth extends in every direction from the detector site, thereby validating that the Earth is an oblate spheroid.
Applying quantum mechanics to the different paths taken by the neutrinos as they travel through Earth's interior can reveal how density changes within the planet and validate models of its internal layers and composition.
