The 1902 research involved 12 male volunteers who came to be known as "The Poison Squad."
Milk at the time was laced with formaldehyde, which tasted sweet and helped mask its spoilage. Sometimes pureed cow brains were added to the top of the milk—so it would look like it had fresh cream. Children died from drinking the milk.
The "Poison Squad" research was led by government scientist Harvey Wiley, the first commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration. Wiley's work helped end the practice of food fraud, including the addition of products such as charred rope, wood chips, formaldehyde, and other contaminants to food.
Wiley's tombstone reads, in part, "father of the pure food law."
