The use of fungi to detoxify land and water—a process known as mycoremediation—has been used to clean up natural resources affected by the 2025 California wildfires.

Findings

Additional insights we found via PBS Terra

  1. The burning of homes, cars, and other objects in wildfires produces toxic ash that can be spread across land and into water sources through runoff.

  2. Myco-wattles—fungi-stuffed cylinders used for stormwater runoff management and erosion control—act as post-wildfire ash decontamination devices.

  3. Myco-wattles have helped remove petrochemicals, lead, arsenic, and other harmful heavy metals from soil and water.
