  1. If someone is exposed to one of these plants for the first time, it can take several weeks to develop a rash.

  2. The rash from these plants typically clears up within three weeks of development.

  3. After washing with cool water and soap following any exposures, scrub under your nail with a brush to remove any urushiol. Clothes and any items exposed to the substance should also be washed with warm, soapy water.

  4. Treatment for poison ivy can involve using calamine lotion and oatmeal baths to soothe the itching. Wet compresses may also help and steroid creams may reduce the itching.

  5. Never burn poison ivy—it aerosizes urushiol, and if the substance gets in your lungs, it can be extremely dangerous and even fatal.
