The substance can still cause rashes even after being on shoelaces, clothing, sleeping bags, boots, or other clothing for multiple years—some reports say five years on surfaces—so they all need to be washed after outdoor adventures with the plants.
Poison ivy blisters don't contain urushiol and can't cause rashes, but the skin's different processing time for urushiol exposures may make it appear that the rash is spreading when really, for example, the urushoil took longer to penetrate and bind to skin cells in thicker parts of the skin.
If prescribed a steroid, do not stop taking it without a doctor's instructions because taking it for too short a time can lead to a rebound reaction—a rash worse than it was initially.
