Some renewable energy sources may weaken the resiliency of electric grids by removing outage buffers provided by coal- and natural gas-fired plants, which provide the system with more time to find a new power source if a plant goes down.

Fossil fuel plants rely on heating water, which turns into steam and rotates massive turbines at a specific rate.
If a plant goes down, the turbines continue to rotate for a while, generating electricity while the grid seeks power elsewhere.
This rotational inertia is absent in solar farms and varies across wind turbines, complicating grid synchronization and potentially resulting in more outages if a failure in electricity generation occurs.
