Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps is independent of Iran's regular army and is one of the most powerful and influential military-political organizations in the Middle East.

  1. It was created after the 1979 Islamic Revolution as a military force loyal to Iran's clerical leadership rather than the state.

  2. The Guard Corps functions as a fully parallel military to Iran's regular armed forces, with around 190,000 troops across its own ground, naval, air, cyber, and paramilitary branches, including control of Iran's ballistic missile program and the Strait of Hormuz.

  3. The IRGC's Quds Force projects Iranian power abroad by arming and directing a network of regional proxies, including Hezbollah, Iraqi militias, and the Houthis.

  4. Since the 2026 war began, experts believe that the IRGC has tightened its grip on power within Iran.
