Indefinite cloning of some endangered species may not sustain their longevity because cloning success rates decrease as genetic mutations accumulate.

Findings

Additional insights we found via Discover Magazine

  1. In a 20-year experiment, scientists cloned mice across 58 generations, producing more than 1,200 animals.

  2. By the 57th generation, cloning worked less than 1% of the time, and none survived beyond a day after birth in the 58th generation.

  3. Despite filtering out harmful mutations to improve cloning success, they accumulated in overwhelming numbers by the later generations and increasingly disrupted gene function.

  4. The research highlights the role of sexual reproduction in introducing genetic variation and preventing the buildup of harmful mutations over time.

  5. The experiment began in 2005 and used the same cloning technique behind Dolly the sheep.
