Findings

Additional insights we found via PBS

  1. Research suggests that both environmental and genetic factors can contribute to the onset of these intense, irrational fears. Often, they can stem from an early traumatic experience, but not always.

  2. People with phobias often suffer from other mental health disorders, including anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

  3. SPACE treatment—Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions—is a newer childhood phobia therapy option designed by an anxiety expert at Yale University.

  4. SPACE therapy focuses on helping parents express support and empathy for the child's phobia by fostering more communication about acknowledging the fear, then slowly building the child's confidence to overcome it.
