Dr. Martin Antony, a Canadian expert on phobias and anxiety, says that fears of creepy, crawly animals like snakes, spiders, and mice are particularly common.
Antony reports there are three known pathways to developing phobias: a traumatic experience, a learned phobia from observing others' fears, and developing a learned fear through what people tell you.
Exposure therapy, involving gradual exposures to what someone's afraid of, remains the most effective known treatment for phobias.
Virtual reality can now offer more opportunities to try exposure therapy in specific situations, such as flying in a virtual airplane multiple times weekly.
