Additional insights we found via TEDx Talks

  1. Yale's Dr. Eli Leibowitz says accommodating a child's fears and anxieties—say, submitting to their requests to repeatedly come tell them goodnight—can further their anxiety. That's why he created a new treatment approach.

  2. Parents, Leibowitz says, should focus on equipping children to think that they don't need parental rescue.

  3. With his SPACE treatment approach—Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions—parents, not kids, go to therapy to help the child cope with phobias or anxiety. The goal is to change the parent's response to a child's anxiety or phobia.

  4. SPACE involves gradually providing support by acknowledging the fear but telling children that they can handle it—such as "I get how scared you are, but I'm very sure you can handle this fear."
