Ambroise Paré, the military surgeon, observed this phenomenon among soldiers who'd lost limbs, yet the term wasn't formally coined until hundreds of years later, by Silas Weir Mitchell, an American Civil War surgeon.
Mitchell put phantom limbs on the map with his 1866 fictional account of the condition in The Atlantic Monthly, featuring a character who lost both arms and both legs in the Civil War.
