Additional insights we found via National Constitution Center

  1. James Madison, the fourth president of the United States, was the primary author of the first draft of the Bill of Rights.

  2. The language of the First Amendment alone drew from over one hundred sources, the earliest being the Charter of the Massachusetts Bay from 1628.

  3. Madison drew from these sources to propose three amendments, which, after deliberation by Congress and additional drafts, were merged into a single amendment outlining the individual liberties of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition.
