  1. Lincoln had befriended Allan H. Pinkerton in 1855 when he was a lawyer for the Illinois Central Railroad, and tasked Pinkerton with transporting him safely to DC for his inauguration in March 1861

  2. Baltimore was the hot spot of anti-Lincoln sentiment; Allan Pinkerton himself witnessed the increasingly violent stances as he traveled south from Delaware to Baltimore

  3. Lincoln managed to thwart the plot by traveling at odds with his public travel schedule, accompanied by Pinkerton detectives
