Additional insights we found via BBC
Common for thousands of years, people would typically sleep at dusk and wake for a few hours around midnight. The period was used for eating a snack, saying prayers, or doing other light chores.
Examples of biphasic sleep are also found in primates, including Madagascar's ring-tailed lemur, which shares similar sleep patterns to preindustrial humans.
Historians say the practice began to disappear in the late 17th century and was eradicated during modern industrialization in the 19th century.
