Muhammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī—translated into Latin as Algoritmi—was born in modern-day Uzbekistan but later worked at the House of Wisdom in Iraq.
About three centuries after it was written, a translation of his book "Concerning the Hindu Art of Reckoning" brought Hindu-Arabic numerals to Europe, which had previously relied on Roman numerals.
