The algorithm was a procedure for calculating a sequence of values—Bernoulli numbers—using the Analytical Engine, a machine designed by English mathematician Charles Babbage to handle data entered via punch cards.
When translating Babbage's designs for the Analytical Engine, which was never built, Lovelace added her own notes, which were three times as long as the translation itself and included the algorithm.
Lovelace is the daughter of one of Britain's greatest poets, Lord Byron, who left Lovelace weeks after she was born.
Lovelace's mother had her tutored in math and music in the hope that Lovelace would not follow in the poetic footsteps of her father, and this education contributed to her ability to author the first computer algorithm.
